Lord Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Walking the sands of Puttaparthi

Man will surely reach the shore of liberation

If he will but only submerge himself deeply

Into the repetition of the Gayatri Mantra

 -Sri Sathya Sai Baba

With sincere and heartfelt desire to be initiated into the Gayatri Mantra, the following took place:

I found myself among those seated in the front row awaiting Sai Baba's darshan. It was back in the early 80's, a time when one could look up and enjoy, in full view, the  beautiful, blue-colored sky  and feel the warmth of the hot, Indian sun (see note). One could follow the big, black crows as they winged and cawed from towering palm to towering palm. There were no security stations to prevent personal items from going inside, like a spiritual book or diary. Back then, the crowds were much, much smaller too.  It was a magical and captivating time when God Himself walked the earth in human form and He did it barefoot in the sand. His gait, so otherworldly graceful, I often wondered whether He were walking or floating. When darshan was concluded, I would scramble to scoop up the tiny, granular, sand blessings where He had just stepped and place them atop my altar, along with all my other sacred treasures.

So, there I was seated in the front row, awaiting with great anticipation the darshan of my Baba. As Swami gracefully strolled by the thousands upon thousands of darshan-starved devotees, He too, passed by me. Seconds later and several yards between us, I felt the inner prompting to call out to Him, "Swami, Swami, will you please initiate me into the Gayatri Mantra?" Straightaway, He turned around and responded, "Already done!"

I had just received from the Lord of Lords, my hearts true desire, to be initiated into the most powerful mantra ever given mankind.  I marveled at the wonder of it all. Thank You my dear, dear Swami.

Sai Kulwant hall now stands where the old dashan sands used to be.
